We have sixty plus Macs, eleven WindowsPC's, sixteen Apple IIx's, one Commodore64, and one Commodore PET- all up and running. Every Classroom has at least three Macs plus a CD player, and several IIe's are in each of the primary rooms.
The fourth/fifth grade rooms have pods with 8-10 ethernetted Macs with full internet access. We currently have over 50 computers with full Internet access running on a T1 connection. We've got kids running Photoshop, scanning in pictures, everyone running ClarisWorks (swapping disks between the Macs and WindowsPC's), and a few folks running Pagemaker. Most of our Macs have a full complement of MECC software (10 programs to choose from), and we also run Fine Artist/Creative Writer, Fraction Action, Math Wizard, Carmen San Diego Series, and twenty five to thirty CD's of various sorts. We make a specialty of taking older donated boxes of all persuasions (Mac, PC, whatever) and creating usuable machines that kids can learn with. We find the Apple IIe series to be of great use in the lower grades as dedicated machines. No cruising the hard drive, no distractions of other icons or programs to run, as on the newer machines. Just the student and the software. We have the motherlode of IIe software, thanks to the hard work of our long time computer teachers, Billie Overholser and her husband Conley.
We have begun testing over the net, with the creating and taking of the tests on the browsers and having them automatically graded and the results sent to email boxes of our choice.
